    Background
Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that causes the disease toxoplasmosis. In developed countries, T. gondii is one of the most common parasites. An infection during pregnancy, known as congenital toxoplasmosis, may affect the child and, therefore, Toxoplasma is also part of the ToRCH screening panel.
