    Background: Atrophin 1 is an evolutionarily conserved transcriptional corepressor. Expansion of a polyglutamine (polyQ) repeat within the atrophin 1 protein results in dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA), an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease.
