NDUFS8 is the core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I) that is believed to belong to the minimal assembly required for catalysis. Complex I functions in the transfer of electrons from NADH to the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor for the enzyme is believed to be ubiquinone (may donate electrons to ubiquinone). Defects in NDUFS8 are a cause of Leigh syndrome (LS). LS is a severe neurological disorder characterized by bilaterally symmetrical necrotic lesions in subcortical brain regions.Synonyms: CI-23kD, Complex I-23kD, NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] iron-sulfur protein 8, NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase 23 kDa subunit, TYKY subunit, mitochondrial
