MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a ring substituted amphetamine derivative. It acts by increasing the net release of the monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, noradrenaline and, to a lesser extent, dopamine) from their respective axon terminals. It resembles the structure of the hallucinogenic material mescaline. As a result of this similarity, the pharmacological effects of MDMA are a blend of those of the amphetamines and mescaline.Synonyms: 3, 4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, Ecstasy
