Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. The function of MMP19 has not been determined. This gene was previously referred to as MMP18 but has been renamed matrix metalloproteinase 19 (MMP19).Synonyms: MMP-18, MMP18, MMP19, Matrix metalloproteinase RASI, Matrix metalloproteinase-19, RASI
