    Background
Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are a family of closely related cell surface glycoproteins involved in cell-cell interactions during growth and play an important role in embryogenesis and development. HCAM (also designated CD44) is a member of the CAM family and participates in the progression of IgA nephropathy by binding hyaluronic acid and osteopontin. The colocalization of osteopontin in the bladder epithelium with αVβ3 integrin and HCAM suggests a role for HCAM in maintaining the integrity of the transitional epithelium by providing the sealing and adhesiveness needed for the impermeable state of the bladder. HCAM is closely related to the secretory phase of the normal menstrual cycle and its expression is decreased in hyperplasia and in cancer cases. Decreased HCAM expression may be functionally involved in the multiple mechanisms of the development and progression of endometrial lesions.Synonyms: CDw44, ECMR-III, Epican, Extracellular matrix receptor III, GP90 lymphocyte homing/adhesion receptor, HUTCH-I, Heparan sulfate proteoglycan, Hermes antigen, Hyaluronate receptor, LHR, MDU2, MDU3, MIC4, PGP-1, Phagocytic glycoprotein 1
