Plakophilin-2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PKP2 gene. This gene encodes a member of the arm-repeat (armadillo) and plakophilin gene families. PKP2 is a constituent of the desmosomal plaque in simple epithelia, some stratified epithelia, and some nonepithelial cells. It is also enriched in the karyoplasm of cells of various types, including those lacking desmosomes. PKP proteins participate in linking cadherins to intermediate filaments in the cytoskeleton and this gene product may regulate the signaling activity of beta-catenin. Plakophilin-2 has been shown to interact with Desmoplakin, Plakoglobin and Desmoglein 1.
