- Specificity
- This antibody detects cortisol, a glucocorticoid that is produced by the adrenal cortex in response to pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation. Cortisol is secreted into the plasma whereby the majority is bound to corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) and serum albumin. Cortisol is up-regulated in response to stress, and leads to an increase in blood pressure and blood sugar, and an immunosuppressive action to help restore body homeostasis. Cortisol also has multiple effects on human behaviour, including sleep patterns, mood, and the reception of sensory input. Changes in cortisol expression have pathological consequences, hypercortisolism results in Cushing's syndrome, whilst hypocortisolism leads to Addison's disease.
