    Background
Adenoviruses are 70-90nm non-enveloped icosohedral viruses containing linear double-stranded DNA, which are unusually stable to adverse pH conditions and chemical or physical agents, and are responsible for respiratory infections such as the common cold, bronchitis, croup and pneumonia and may also cause gastroenteritis, pharyngitis, urethritis, conjunctivitis and cystitis. There are at least 51 immunologically distinct types of Adenovirus, which are categorised into the subgenera A-F based on different morphological, oncogenic, haemagglutinating and DNA sequence properties.
