Background
Mycobacteria are straight or slightly curved, non motile rods that cause TB. Mycobacteria avium causes TB in birds and a pulmonary infection of humans. It can also be transmitted to immunocompromised humans such as AIDS patients where it can cause disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).
