- Background
- Cyclin E, a positive regulator of the cell cycle, controls the transition of cells from G1 to S phase. Cyclin E forms a complex with Cdk2, the active kinase follows cyclin D/Cdk4 in progressively phosphorylating pRb, releasing it from members of the E2F family. E2F transcrIPPtion factors in turn activate a set of target genes that are essential for entry into S phase. Deregulation of the G1-S checkpoint contributes to uncontrolled cell division, a hallmark of cancer.
