    Background
Swi6 is also known as chromatinassociated swi6 protein and repression of silent mating type loci protein. This protein recognizes and binds to histone H3 tails that are methylated at Lys-9, leading to epigenetic repression. Swi6 is also involved in the repression of the silent mating-type loci MAT2 and MAT3 and it may be resposible for the compaction of MAT2/3 into a heterochromatin-like conformation which represses the transcription of these silent cassettes. Swi6 also interacts with the cohesin subunit psc3. Swi6 has a nuclear localization and contains 2 chromo domains.Synonyms: Chromatin-associated protein swi6
