- Background
- Swi6 is also known as chromatinassociated swi6 protein and repression of silent mating type loci protein. This protein recognizes and binds to histone H3 tails that are methylated at Lys-9, leading to epigenetic repression. Swi6 is also involved in the repression of the silent mating-type loci MAT2 and MAT3 and it may be resposible for the compaction of MAT2/3 into a heterochromatin-like conformation which represses the transcription of these silent cassettes. Swi6 also interacts with the cohesin subunit psc3. Swi6 has a nuclear localization and contains 2 chromo domains.Synonyms: Chromatin-associated protein swi6
